No. braids themselves do not cause your hair to grow. Your hair will grow no matter what you do to it as long as you don't damage the hair follicles in your scalp.
It does help your hair to grow by keeping your hands out of it for a while. Basically when you have braids, you can't brush your hair, relax it it, etc. so it allows your hair to rest in it's natural state.
Relaxers don't stop hair growth (if they did then my hair wouldn't be down my back nor would my sister's) but they do cause breakage if you leave them on for too long which I see a lot of aa women doing. A relaxer should NOT make your hair stick straight. If you're leaving it in until it's straight instead of just relaxing the curl a bit then you are over processing your hair.
I do think that you will have some breakage due to not having a relaxer for a while because your hair is going to have two different textures in one strand and the new growth is going to be stronger than the old relaxed ends. It happens to everyone who's had a relaxer and let's it grow out so the best thing to do is to use super hydrating shampoos and conditioners and leave-in conditioners to keep your hair healthy and not dry so it doesn't break as much. But there still will be breakage, ESPECIALLY if the braids are too tight.
Happy braiding!Does braiding your hair helps it grow? african american women plz help!?

Braiding will not stimulate hair growth.
Braiding will not make your hair grow faster.
Braiding puts stress on your scalp (especially the tighter they are!).
Brushing does not make your hair grow faster.
You may think that your hair is growing faster because you notice the braids getting loose and growing out. You may also see little short hairs popping out. This could be one of two things, it could be new-growth or breakage.
I don't think it will only because hair grows at the same rate almost always now if you like you can take biotin that promotes hair growth. You can buy it at a drug store target walmart. No need to spend a lot a a fancy vitamin shop it's all the same. Another thing hair seems to grow when we tie it back or braid it but this can cause breakage so be gentle with your hair.
yes it can increase growth(new growth) but remember to give your hair a rest for about two weeks and message it will olive oil, everyday to strentghthen the braids so that it wont cause breakage or loss. make sure you wrap your braids with a silk satin scarf every night. and make sure you clean them with a cotton swab by putting some warm water and cleansing the scalp.(and only leave them in for about 2 weeks) -or it might cause hair damage.
I suggest you braid it with weave. Braiding it with your natural hair every 2 weeks, well it depens on what kind of hair you have. if you have regular african american hair (after a perm) than you should braid it with weave. I'm in pretty much the same situation as you and I've braided my hair with weave and I have so much new growth.
Yes the braids will help it grow because you won't be adding any stress to your hair. I'm in the process of doing this to my daughter's hair and I've been braiding it since April and it has grown at least 3-5 inches and she has badddddd hair
It will, you'll start to notice the new growth after a while and you just smooth it down with product..I think the braids stimulate your scalp.
It grows faster because its not having any chemicals or heat put on it so its healthier. Yes keep your scalp moisturized. I use B %26amp; B Super Gro to speed hair growth along.
I have never had a perm, but i do know that braiding with extensions does break off the hair, because it is a different hair texture, but if you absolutely must have longer hair then be sure to moisturize..... With GREASE!!!! LOL!!! Oh and try using the hair they use for kinky twist. It won't break it off, but it does dry out your hair without anything to keep it oiled. And finally the extensions do grow faster but what good is it if the hair at the bottom is gone?!!!
yes its true. if u do braid ur hair and leave it like that for 1 week and 3 days its will grow 1-5 inches. thats wat happend to mine. and no i dont have nappy hair; very soft. i would do any kind of braids big or tiny doesnt matter! :)
I'm not sure if braiding helps, but I know that brushing makes it grow! I brush my hair twice as much as I used to and it grows over a foot each year!
