How can I keep my braided hair smelling nice all the time?

Is there a way of keeping my braids smelling good without having to wash it everyday?

Its kinda embarrassing to have smelly hair...

Is there a method or ointment I could use?How can I keep my braided hair smelling nice all the time?
Hair smells a bit, braided or not, from sweat and oil on your scalp, and also it the hair picks up smoke (from cigarettes, barbecues etc).

For the scalp, avoid hairspray (braids don't need it, anyway) as it can clog the pores and make it worse. Take little half balls of cotton wool, spray them with a light citrusy cologne, and rub it in at the base of the braids and between the rows. This will clean and freshen the scalp in a few minutes.

Only washing will really help the smokey bits, but in an emergency you can rub the braids, a few at a time, with a tissue sprayed with cologne. Tissues break up and make a mess; a piece of kitchen towel would be better. Only rub from the roots towards the ends. How can I keep my braided hair smelling nice all the time?
